Perihelion Sun

Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle. While aphelion, our most distant point from the Sun, occurs in July, perihelion, our closest approach, happens in January. At perihelion, Earth is about 147 million kilometers from the Sun. This means that, despite winter storms, the Northern Hemisphere is closest to the Sun during its coldest months.
