Hot Stars in the Southern Milky Way

Hot blue stars, glowing red hydrogen gas, and dark dust clouds are scattered through this dramatic region of the Milky Way. It's in the southern constellation of Ara, about 4,000 light-years from Earth. The young, massive stars on the left emit intense ultraviolet radiation. This radiation ionizes the hydrogen gas, creating the characteristic red glow.
