Unusual Giant Galaxy NGC 1316

NGC 1316 is a giant galaxy with an unusual appearance. It has the size and shape of an elliptical galaxy, but also contains dust lanes and a disk, which are more common in spiral galaxies. Scientists believe these features could be the result of interactions with another galaxy over the past billion years. NGC 1316 has been studied for novae, which are stellar explosions, to help calibrate the universe's expansion.
