Full Throttle For Deep Space 1

Deep Space 1's ion drive, seen here in an assembly room, produces only a tiny amount of thrust, about 1/50th of a pound. That is enough to hold up a piece of paper on Earth. However, these solar-powered systems can run continuously, making them efficient for long-duration space missions, unlike chemical rockets that provide powerful but brief bursts.
