Henrietta Leavitt Calibrates the Stars

Henrietta Swan Leavitt revolutionized our understanding of stellar brightness and variability. Working at Harvard College Observatory, she precisely calibrated the photographic magnitudes of 47 stars. Leavitt discovered over 1500 variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds. From this catalog, she found that brighter Cepheid variable stars take longer to vary, a fact crucial for measuring cosmic distances.
