Jupiter Swallows Comet Shoemaker Levy 9

When Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 encountered Jupiter in 1994, its fragments plunged into the giant planet's gaseous atmosphere. This time-lapse sequence shows the aftermath of two fragments striking Jupiter, creating large dark marks. Unlike impacts on rocky planets that form craters, these events created temporary features in Jupiter's vast atmosphere, which gradually faded over time.
