Billows of Smog in the Outer Galaxy

Our galaxy contains vast amounts of gas, mostly hydrogen and helium, but also trace amounts of heavier molecules like carbon monoxide. This radio image from the FCRAO Outer Galaxy Survey shows the diverse structures of this molecular gas. Dense clouds are regions where stars are forming, while open voids might be carved out by strong winds from massive, newly formed stars.
