On the Origin of Gold

The origin of gold in our jewelry is still debated. Its abundance in our solar system is higher than what can be explained by the early universe, stars, or typical supernovae. Some astronomers propose that neutron-rich heavy elements like gold are primarily formed in rare, neutron-rich explosions, such as the collision of neutron stars. This image is a computer animation depicting two neutron stars spiraling toward each other.
