Burning Tree Sprite

This dramatic image shows a 'burning tree' that is actually a red sprite, captured above Tainan City, Taiwan. Red sprites are fleeting optical flashes occurring 30 to 90 kilometers above thunderstorms. These poorly understood phenomena are cousins to lightning, dancing at the edges of storm systems.
