A Leonid Meteor Explodes

As Earth passes through debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, sand-sized particles burn up in our atmosphere, creating the annual Leonids Meteor Shower. This particular year, Earth passed unusually close to the comet's debris, promising high activity. This image captures a bright Leonid meteor. The Leonids are known for producing many bright meteors, often called fireballs.
