NGC 1569: Heavy Elements from a Small Galaxy

For astronomers, elements other than hydrogen and helium are often called "heavy elements." Even combined, they make up a small fraction of the Universe. However, heavy elements significantly influence galaxy and star formation, and the formation of planets and people. This false-color X-ray image from the Chandra Observatory shows the small dwarf galaxy NGC 1569, surrounded by these heavy elements.
