Rectangular Ridges on Mars

Rectangular ridges on Mars, like these first seen by Mariner 9 in 1972, pose puzzles for planetary geologists. The ridge wall shown here runs for about 5 kilometers. Such formations provide clues to past geological processes that have shaped the Martian surface over billions of years. Data from orbiting spacecraft continues to reveal these enigmatic structures.
