Dusty Environs of Eta Carinae

Eta Carinae, a massive star about 7,500 light-years away, has a history of dramatic changes in brightness. In April 1843, it briefly became the second brightest star in Earth's night sky, despite its distance. Now, it is only easily visible with binoculars or a small telescope. This image shows the complex and evolving nebula surrounding Eta Carinae.
