Will the Universe End in a Big Rip?

Cosmologists are exploring different scenarios for the universe's end, including a "Big Rip." This theory suggests a growing field of mysterious repulsive energy could tear everything apart. While the universe began with a Big Bang, analysis of recent measurements allows for this possibility. If it happens, dark energy would eventually overcome the forces holding galaxies, and then even atoms, together.
