Trifid Pillars & Jets

These dust pillars in the Trifid Nebula are denser than their surroundings, allowing them to resist erosion from the hostile environment. The image shows the end of a large gas and dust pillar, with a smaller pillar and an unusual jet extending from it. Pink dots indicate newly formed low-mass stars.
