X-Rays Indicate Star Ripped Up by Black Hole

This illustration depicts a star being torn apart by a black hole, an event that generates powerful X-ray flares. The intense gravitational pull of a black hole stretches a passing star, causing some of its gas to fall in. This infalling gas heats up and emits a blast of X-rays, like those recently observed from the center of galaxy RX J1242-11. Such tidal disruption events provide clues about the black holes at galactic centers.
