A Prominent Solar Prominence from SOHO

Solar prominences are spectacular clouds of gas, held above the Sun's surface by its magnetic field. This impressive prominence, captured by NASA's SOHO spacecraft, is large enough to easily fit the Earth underneath. These quiescent prominences can last for about a month and sometimes erupt, sending hot gas into the solar system.
