The Encke Gap: A Moon Goes Here

Yesterday, Cassini became the first spacecraft to orbit Saturn, passing through a 25,000-kilometer gap in the rings at 15 kilometers per second. Its narrow-angle camera then captured this close-up of the Encke Gap, a much smaller, 300-kilometer wide feature. The image shows scalloped edges and density wave patterns within the rings flanking the gap. These details provide valuable information about the dynamics of Saturn's ring system.
