RCW 79: Stars in a Bubble

RCW 79 is a massive bubble of gas and dust, seventy light-years across, blown by the powerful winds of hot, young stars. The Spitzer Space Telescope captured this infrared view, showing dust glowing red from the heat. This expanding shell, 17,000 light years away in Centaurus, is triggering the birth of new stars as it pushes into surrounding material.
