Eclipse and Ecliptic

When a Full Moon aligns near the ecliptic, a lunar eclipse can occur. This composite image, recorded near Paris, France, illustrates this cosmic alignment. The long blue line running diagonally traces the ecliptic plane, Earth's orbital plane around the Sun. A series of images show the Moon's movement during the eclipse, following its orbit at a small angle to the ecliptic.
