50th Anniversary of Sputnik: Traveling Companion

Sputnik, meaning 'traveling companion,' was Earth's first artificial moon, launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. This 184-pound, 22-inch sphere had four whip antennas and battery-powered transmitters. For three weeks, it broadcast a continuous 'beeping' signal, captivating an astounded global audience. Sputnik's launch profoundly changed the world, leading to the creation of NASA and initiating the space race to the Moon.
