A Solar Eclipse Painting from the 1700s
This 1735 painting by Cosmas Damian Asam might be one of the earliest realistic depictions of a total solar eclipse. It clearly shows not only the darkened Sun but also the solar corona, the star's outer atmosphere, and the diamond ring effect, where a final burst of sunlight shines through lunar valleys. The painting captures the rare celestial event with striking detail.
