The First Explorer
Fifty years ago, Explorer I was launched, marking the beginning of space exploration for the United States. This 30-pound satellite carried instruments to measure temperature, micrometeorite impacts, and the density of electrons and ions in space. Data from Explorer I led to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts.
