Unusual Dusty Galaxy NGC 7049

This unusual galaxy, NGC 7049, looks like a smooth elliptical galaxy with a prominent, dark dust ring. The ring is mostly seen in silhouette, darker than the millions of stars behind it. No one is sure how this galaxy was created, especially given its strange appearance. The galaxy is pictured here as imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope.
