Unexpected Impact on Jupiter

Something hit Jupiter in July 2009. An amateur astronomer first spotted the impact, and the Hubble Space Telescope later confirmed it. This animation shows the dark spot created by the impact, which faded over the course of a month and a half. This was a rare chance to see a direct impact on our solar system's largest planet.
