M72: A Globular Cluster of Stars
Globular clusters are ancient groupings of stars that once dominated the Milky Way. When our galaxy first formed, there were thousands of them, but now fewer than 200 remain. Many were destroyed over the eons by encounters with each other or the Galactic center. These surviving relics are older than any other structures in our galaxy.
