Evolution of the Moon

Our Moon was likely formed when a Mars-sized object hit Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. The debris from that impact gravitationally condensed, forming the glowing-hot Moon. Its surface cooled and cracked, then was bombarded by rocks, including one impact that created the Aitken Basin 4.3 billion years ago. This period of heavy bombardment continued for hundreds of millions of years.
