Venus at the Edge

Venus crosses the edge of the Sun in this view from the Hinode spacecraft. Historically, measuring the exact timing of these crossings helped astronomers triangulate the distance to Venus and establish the astronomical unit. Modern space-based observations, like this one, capture the event against the Sun's turbulent surface, showing prominences lofted above the limb.
