A Galaxy Collision in NGC 6745

Galaxies do not typically appear like NGC 6745. This image shows the aftermath of a galactic collision that has been ongoing for hundreds of millions of years. The larger galaxy, once a spiral, is now damaged and appears peculiar due to gravitational distortions. Although direct star collisions are unlikely, the interaction has significantly altered the shapes of both galaxies.
