The Great Comet of 1680 Over Rotterdam

The Great Comet of 1680, also known as Comet Kirch, was a bright sungrazer, meaning it passed very close to the Sun. This historical depiction shows the comet over Rotterdam. Like Comet ISON, which was approaching the Sun in 2013, Comet Kirch was not part of the Kreutz group of sungrazers. Its long tail, stretching across the sky, made it a memorable celestial event, demonstrating the dramatic appearance of comets that make close solar approaches.
