Spacecraft Rosetta Shows Comet has Two Components

The Rosetta spacecraft, during its approach to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, made the surprising discovery that the comet's nucleus has two distinct components. Scientists speculate that this double-lobed shape might be the result of two comets merging, or perhaps the comet is a loose pile of rubble pulled apart by tidal forces. This image from Rosetta provides crucial data for understanding the formation and evolution of comets.
