Perihelion Approaches

This dramatic outburst from Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko occurred on August 12, just hours before its closest approach to the Sun. The Rosetta spacecraft's science camera captured this stark image of the four-kilometer-wide, double-lobed nucleus. The comet completes an orbit of the Sun every 6.45 years.
