Icelandic Legends and Aurora

NASA APOD · Elizabeth M. Ryan; Rollover Annotation: Judy Schmidt
MENSAJE CÓSMICO

This dramatic image captures the aurora borealis over Vík í Mýrdal, a village in southern Iceland. The Atlantic Ocean surrounds Reynisdrangar, basalt rock pillars that local folklore says are petrified trolls. The aurora, caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere, glows brightly in the sky above.
