A First Glimpse of the Great American Eclipse

This dramatic snapshot shows the Moon's dark umbral shadow making landfall in Oregon during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. The image was taken from 45,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, 250 miles off the coast. The Moon's shadow raced eastward across the United States, creating a widely shared celestial event. This photo captures the initial moments of the eclipse's journey over land.
