A Tether in Space

Space tethers are long strands of material with the potential to stabilize satellites and generate electricity. One ambitious concept is the space elevator, connecting Earth's surface to geosynchronous orbit, as popularized by Arthur C. Clarke. This image shows a tether being deployed from the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1996, part of an experiment to study tether dynamics in space.
