NGC 2442: Galaxy in Volans

Distorted galaxy NGC 2442, located about 50 million light-years away, can be found in the southern constellation Volans. Its two spiral arms extend from a central bar, creating a hook-like appearance in wide-field images. This detailed mosaic, combining Hubble Space Telescope and European Southern Observatory data, reveals obscuring dust lanes, young blue star clusters, and reddish star-forming regions.
