Threads of NGC 1947

NGC 1947 is a peculiar galaxy found in the southern constellation Dorado, about 40 million light-years distant. In this image, obscuring lanes of cosmic dust thread across its bright central regions. Unlike typical spiral galaxies, the dust and gas in NGC 1947 do not follow the same rotational patterns as its stars. This suggests a more complex history for the galaxy's visible threads of material.
