Comet Leonard Closeup from Australia

This closeup of Comet Leonard's coma and inner tails was captured through a small telescope. The ion tail, made of ionized gas, is energized by ultraviolet light from the Sun and pushed outward by the solar wind. The solar wind's structure and the comet's gas jets create the tail's dynamic appearance.
