In 2002, the star V838 Mon suddenly expanded, becoming one of the brightest stars in the Milky Way, then shrunk and faded. This type of stellar flash had never been seen before. The featured Hubble Space Telescope image shows light echoes from the outburst, where light from the star illuminates surrounding dust clouds.
