Sun Dance

The Sun's surface sometimes appears to dance, as seen in this impressive prominence from 2012. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured this event, which resembled an acrobatic dive roll, in ultraviolet light. This time-lapse video covers about three hours, showing hot plasma directed by a looping magnetic field. The prominence is immense, easily capable of engulfing the entire Earth.
