A Leaky Solar Prominence

A solar prominence, a crest of hot gas expelled from the Sun's surface, hovers above it. The Sun's magnetic field holds it aloft. Prominences can last for days, explode into space, or fall back to the Sun. Their fate depends on changes in the complex magnetic field, which can create escape routes for trapped solar particles.
