Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, seen here by the Hubble Space Telescope, was nicknamed the 'string of pearls' comet. Jupiter's strong gravity tore its single nucleus into pieces during a close encounter in 1992. These fragments then famously collided with Jupiter in 1994.
