The Trifid Nebula, M20, glows with vivid blue and violet colors due to the presence of many young stars. The light from these massive, young stars ionizes the surrounding gas. When electrons recombine with the gas, blue and violet light is emitted. Some of the nebula's light also comes from starlight reflecting off dust.
