Gamma Ray Sky Map

This map shows the entire sky in gamma rays, photons with more than 40 million times the energy of visible light. NASA's Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, in orbit in the early 1990s, scanned the sky to create this image. A diffuse gamma-ray glow from the plane of our Milky Way is visible. Gamma rays are blocked by Earth's atmosphere, so space-based telescopes are necessary to observe them.
