In 1610, Galileo discovered that Jupiter had four bright moons. Io, the innermost of these Galilean moons, is about the size of Earth's Moon. It is covered with volcanoes, many of which are currently active. The material expelled in the eruptions may contain sulfur compounds, which contribute to its colorful surface.
