NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image of Mercury was compiled from data by the Mariner 10 spacecraft, which flew by the planet three times in 1974. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the second smallest, after Pluto. It rotates so slowly that one day, from sunset to sunset, lasts 176 Earth days. Mariner 10 provided the first close-up views of Mercury's heavily cratered surface.
