A Galaxy Gravitational Lens

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sometimes a massive galaxy can act like a lens, bending light from a more distant object. This image shows a red galaxy at the center, with four blue smudges around it. Each smudge is a different image of the same background quasar, distorted by the galaxy's gravity. This phenomenon, called gravitational lensing, creates a cosmic mirage.
