The Lagoon Nebula, M8, is a giant interstellar cloud in Sagittarius, visible to the naked eye. This active star-forming region contains many young stars and hot gas. The open cluster NGC 6530 is embedded within it, with its hot, blue stars illuminating the nebula. A dark lane of dust gives the nebula its name.
