COSMIC MESSAGE
South of the Orion Nebula, the bright blue reflection nebula NGC 1999 is illuminated by the embedded variable star V380 Orionis. This nebula, about 1,500 light-years away, is marked with a dark sideways T-shape. Infrared observations revealed this dark shape is not a dust cloud, but a hole in the nebula itself.
