Tanks for the Lift

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sixteen minutes after liftoff, the Space Shuttle Discovery's jettisoned External Tank, or ET, is seen here falling back to Earth. This photograph was taken by shuttle astronaut James P. Bagian. The 154-foot long ET, the largest non-reusable component of the Shuttle system, carried over 500,000 gallons of propellant. Its ultimate fate is to break up in the atmosphere and fall into a remote ocean area.
